“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ …”
“John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not
worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Would you happen to know that there is more than one type of baptism described in the Bible? Try, to see if you can identify different types
of baptism, reading through the verses of scriptures stated above. Through these scriptures we can see that there are four major types of baptisms, namely:
Baptism into Christ
Baptism with water
Baptism with the Holy Spirit
Baptism with fire
We want to focus our discussion in this article, on the first type of baptism – Baptism into Christ. What does it mean to be baptized into Christ? The word,
baptism, emanated from a root word which means to immerse or to dunk in a fluid (gas or water). Therefore, when we get baptized into Christ, we get immersed
into Christ. To further appreciate this concept, we would like to reference Jesus’ statement in John 15:5, where he indicates that he is the vine, and anyone
who believes in him is a branch. Therefore, just like every branch in a tree gets immersed into the vine or trunk of the tree, everyone who has accepted Jesus
as Lord and Savior, is immersed into the body of Jesus Christ, who is the vine. Please feel free to refresh your memory in this regard, by reading the article
titled “Accept Jesus as Lord.”
But, some people might say: “When I read my bible, I don’t understand it.” Good question! We would like to refer such people to the experience of Moses in
Exodus 33:13 and Psalm 103:7. Based on these scriptures, we can see that Moses was taught the ways of the Lord because he asked for it. Additionally,
Psalm 25:9 states that only the humble or the meek will be taught the ways of the Lord. God is not a respecter of persons. If we ask to be taught the ways
of God with an attitude of meekness, we would be taught, as well. If we ask God to make us understand His ways (the spirit behind the letter) in the bible,
we will be taught. The bible will come alive to us when we read it, and faith will rise in our hearts. We will then be able to regulate our lives based on
a complete understanding of the ways of God, which is His Word.
The concept of being baptized into Christ was also described in the book of Ephesians (Ephesians 1:13), where it is indicated that, when we got born again, we
were sealed with the substance (Zoe) generated by the Holy Spirit to announce to all of creation that we belong to God. This truth is foundational and fundamental
to Christianity. But, why is this concept fundamental and important?
A little measure of Zoe inside the recreated human spirit in the form of a seal is sufficient to announce to all of creation that we belong to God, but it is not
sufficient to empower the believer to be a faithful witness of Jesus Christ, especially in this depraved generation. With the platform of this seal, however, Jesus
encourages us, just like he encouraged the disciples, to seek for the baptism of the Holy Spirit so that we can be faithful witnesses, who can do the works of the
ministry (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:8). So, we want to encourage you to seek after the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, to be filled with the power of God in abundance so you
can be a faithful witness of the Lord Jesus Christ. Would you like to know how? If you answered “Yes” please proceed to the next article – Baptism with the
Holy Spirit.
