Humility the Truly Lesser

By Lan & Nita Olude

Matthew 11:29 (NIV)
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

This verse of scripture describes how Jesus (the truly greater) demonstrated humility toward His disciples (the truly lesser) in His earthly ministry. We can learn from Jesus how to apply humility at this level in our own lives. When we attain some height of greatness, God expects us to be genuinely interested in helping others learn our ways so they can find true rest for their souls. Although the truly greater do not submit to the judgment of the truly lesser, neither do they show the truly lesser deference, nonetheless, the truly greater have an opportunity to show humility through genuine care, patience and gentleness. This truth is further validated in Ephesians 4:12.

Ephesians 4:2 (NIV)
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

The word “humble” in this passage is equated to the word “patient” and describes the way Jesus demonstrated humility toward His disciples. Jesus cared so much for them that He died on the cross for them and for the rest of humanity. Although Jesus never deferred or submitted to the judgment of His disciples, He demonstrated humility toward the disciples by being gentle and patient toward them.

When the truly greater demonstrate patience and gentleness toward the truly lesser, they sow a seed of humility, which is destined to produce a harvest of the grace of God because the earth operates on a sowing and reaping principle (Genesis 8:22). When God confers His anointing upon us,we need to walk circumspectly in humility by constantly reminding ourselves of our humble beginnings and subsequently practicing humility toward others who may not be as fortunate as us, yet. Paul further reiterates this point in his letter to the Galatians, where he asks those who are strong in the Lord (The Truly Greater) to restore anyone (The Truly Lesser) who has fallen in a spirit of gentleness considering themselves (Galatians 6:1).

We need to be genuinely interested in sharing the anointing and the grace on our lives with the truly lesser who is interested in partaking of this grace and anointing. The more we do this, the more of the grace of God we will receive. In the next article, God’s Promises to the Gentle, we will review a few blessings associated with conducting ourselves in humility towards the truly lesser.
