Philippians 2:3 (NIV)
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”
We referenced this verse of scripture in our previous article
Acknowledging Your Peers
and stated that before we can actually show humility towards our peers, we must have recognized them as our peers to start with. In this article, we want to
review ways in which we can now demonstrate this action of humility toward our peers.
As clearly stated in this scripture, we can see that when we act selflessly toward our peers, then we are demonstrating humility toward them. Selflessness
includes giving other people the opportunity to utilize the world’s scarce resources to meet their own needs, as well. When we do this, we will sow seeds of
selflessness which, in return, will produce a harvest of having our needs met, also. On the contrary, if we act selfishly toward our peers, we have sown seeds
of selfishness, and we will reap a harvest of selfishness in return. This principle is especially applicable because the planet operates on a Seed, Time and
Harvest principle (Genesis 8:22). It applies in the area of finances, but it applies in other areas of life, as well.
In addition to viewing opportunities to display selflessness as opportunities to reap a good harvest, we need to view this action of humility as an
opportunity to receive higher levels of the grace of God. Just like we said in our previous article, God is obligated to give grace to the humble; and,
when we demonstrate humility by being selfless, we stand eligible to receive a measure of God’s grace. This measure of grace will release the life of
God (Zoe), which will give us light and understanding (John 1:4) and will contribute to increasing the longevity of our faith in God. We will be able
to subsequently trust God for a much longer haul because of this extra grace in our lives.
We need to be honest, in this regard. We need to communicate to our peers that we value their interests in thought, in word and with our actions. We need to
speak the truth in this regard and let them know that their inputs are critical to our survival in this planet and the fulfilment of our destiny. We need
our peers to survive.
