Matthew 24:35 (NIV)
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”
“I really intended to come to your house as promised, but circumstances were just beyond my control…I’m so sorry I couldn’t make it…”
Sometimes we find ourselves making statements like this as excuses after we have been forced by obstinate circumstances to break our words.
Although such excuses may appear legitimate, we need to understand that situations like this force us to operate in some kind of dishonesty,
because we could not keep our words. Fortunately, our God is not like that. He watches over His Word to perform it, and He has never been
found to break His promises. We as God’s children need to aspire toward this level of truth and honesty, as well.
In previous articles, we reviewed how to speak the truth at the heart level toward oneself and toward others in our relationships. In this article,
we will review how to speak the truth at the God-level. In other words, we want to challenge our readers to aspire toward being able to make statements
like Jesus made in Matthew 24:35. We know some people may think “that’s not possible…only Jesus can do that.” But looking through the pages of the Bible,
we can see that other people who knew God operated like this as well.
In 1 Kings 17:1 there is a record of a man, Elijah, who said assertively that there was not going to be rain over the land of Israel, exceptby
his word ,
and this word came to pass exactly like Elijah said. We can see a similar case in the ministry of Paul when
he warned the people on board his ship not to
sail because of an impending storm which could jeopardize their safety (Acts 27:10). Although the centurion and the pilot of the ship disregarded Paul’s
advice, nonetheless, the situation turned out exactly as Paul said.
On both occasions referenced above, human beings under God stood in offices to issue orders similar to the assertive statement of Jesus in Matthew 24:35 above.
If they did it, we can do it as well. When we start operating at this level of honesty, then we will rise above natural circumstances and overcome the potential
of being forced to tell lies inadvertently because of hostile circumstances. We need to admit to the fact that we can operate at this level and start aspiring for
it. This is Truth at the God-level. But, how can we operate at this level? How can we rise above the pressure of obstinate circumstances so we can stay true to
our words? To answer these questions and similar, we want to invite you to read the next article:
Humility at the God-Level.
